With over 1400 successful RTI queries to his credit, veteran conservationist, Biswajit Mohanty, is a Grand Master of the Right to Information Act! Many of his RTI applications have resulted in unearthing and putting a stop to rampant illegalities involving mining, mini hydel power plants, and violation of forest and environment laws. Biswajit will share rare insights and tips on effective use of RTI for conservation, peppered with entertaining anecdotes on his search for the truth. Not to be missed!

About the speaker

Biswajit Mohanty is Managing Trustee, Wildlife Society of Orissa, which is a Member of the National Board for Wildlife. He has been at the forefront of wildlife protection since 1994, and has undertaken several sting operations leading to seizures of wildlife products. He has filed several PILs in the Supreme Court of India and the Odisha High Court, on matters concerning Vedanta, mining scams, operation of saw mills, and recovery of Rs.70,000 crores in fines for illegal mining. He is the recipient of several awards including the National RTI award for bravery, 2010, Times of India Leadership Award in environment, and the Sanctuary Asia Wildlife Service Award. He is a Member of the Governing Body of the Wildlife Institute of India, a Board Member of Green Peace, India, a Board Member of Transparency International India, and Member, Odisha State Audit Advisory Board of CAG, among others.

A fearless and tireless campaigner and whistle blower, his contributions to conservation in Odisha are unparalleled. He is a practicing Chartered Accountant, has a degree in Law, and a Ph.D. in Life Science.
